Lewis Landsberg, MD

Irving S. Cutter Professor of Medicine and dean emeritus, Feinberg School of Medicine, director, NCCO

Dr. Landsberg's current focus is aggregating resources to grow the NCCO into an internationally recognized research, clinical, educational, and public policy powerhouse that effectively addresses the worldwide obesity epidemic. His extensive leadership experience suits him well for this role.

From August 1999 until June 2007, he held the appointment of vice president for medical affairs, Northwestern University, and dean of the Feinberg School of Medicine. Under his leadership, the medical
school created three new centers and one new institute and recruited eight new center and institute directors and 17 new department chairs.

In addition, extramural research support doubled and space devoted to research increased by more than 70 percent. In 2007, he was honored by the creation of an endowment in his name (the Lewis Landsberg Deanship) made by Northwestern Memorial Hospital, its medical staff, and Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation.  Previously, he was the Irving S. Cutter Professor of Medicine and chair of the Department of Medicine at the medical school, and physician-in-chief of Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He held faculty posts at Yale University and Harvard Medical School before joining the Feinberg School of Medicine faculty.

The author of more than 220 publications, he has an international reputation in the fields of hypertension and obesity. He is a member of numerous distinguished professional societies including the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, the American Heart Association Council for High Blood Pressure Research, and the International Society of Hypertension Scientific Council, where he has served as vice president.

Dr. Landsberg graduated summa cum laude from Williams College followed by graduation from Yale University School of Medicine and residency training in internal medicine completed at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Following that, as a research fellow, he worked at the National Institutes of Health in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Julius Axelrod.
